The Creation of a Family heirloom

We have enjoyed carving Christmas tree trunks into Family heirloom Santa's for many years.. This process has become a way to save that very special tree trunk for years to come.. Perhaps it's baby's first Christmas, or maybe the first Christmas tree in a new household or marriage... In any scenario, a family heirloom is born and a piece of a once living tree is saved for generations to come...

We do these carvings from 14 to 36 inches, tree permitting, at a cost of 7.00 per inch for an average three inch thick tree trunk, plus return shipping if that is the case...

Follow along below to see the process, and information on how to contact us regarding our carving service....

First, the tree trunks are shipped, or delivered to us, minus the branches...They are then placed in dryers to bring the moisture content down to about 7 to 11 percent....

We then peel and rough sand the trunk to find those "just right" bends and humps to design a great Santa, and cut the trunk to the requested height...(this is the fun part, It's where the Santa's start whispering to let you know where they are)..

The Santa's are then carved, leaving a few inches of bark on the bottom to add to the appeal of using tree trunks...

Now, it's off to the paint bench...The Santa's are painted, staying as close as possible to the customers wishes...We always hand shadow every carving....They are then sprayed with three coats of hardener to protect the carving and paint and then a coat of antiqueing is added to the beards and white fur for more depth...

Now, after about 24 hours drying time, the Santa's are sprayed with two additional coats of hardener, only this time we add a matting agent to the mixture to keep them from being shiny...This is where everything falls together....A new family heirloom is born...And we smile, knowing that we have been part of saving that one special piece of someone's Christmas....We can also do the tree trunk carvings in Uncle Sam's, Snowmen, or even woodspirits....Whatever your heart desires...
